What Are The 5 Stages of Video Production?

Curious about the video production process? Why does it have five stages?

Here’s what it takes to produce a kickass corporate video💥

Video production needs to be planned, strategic and executed well. Every video is unique, which means production will be different for everyone.

While every production may differ, a producer will follow specific stages to organise, plan and produce a jaw-dropping video.

And it’s no surprise that video production has become increasingly popular. According to a Wyzol study, 87% of video marketers reported that video gives them a positive ROI. Additionally, they felt that video is brilliant for lead generation.

But to smash out a great video, you’ll need to follow the five stages of video production, namely; Planning, Pre-production, Production, Post-production and Distribution.

The 5 stages…

1. Planning

The first step to corporate video production is coming up with an idea and a plan of action💡

This stage is where video ideas will fly around, and storyboards will be created to bring a vision to life. It helps to determine which idea will meet the brand’s goals and reach your target audience.

Once the idea is chosen, the client will dish out the budget. Then you’ll move on to the second stage.

2. Pre-production

This is where the producer will draw out a timeline to produce your corporate video ⏰

The idea and where you choose to share your video will determine the amount of time it will take to produce and distribute.

Both the producer and videographers will plan a shooting schedule, which normally includes:

  • Contact details of producers, videographers, actors and client
  • Location
  • Times
  • Point of View shots to be taken
  • Script
  • Equipment needed
  • Brand guidelines
3. Production

If you’re a producer, you know that this is an exciting yet highly intense stage😬  Everything you’ve planned has to go according to plan. And if it doesn’t, you need plan B. Otherwise, this could cost you more time and money.

So many things could change, such as the weather,  traffic – you name it! You have to think about all the possibilities.

In this stage you’ll also follow the shooting schedule.  Additionally, videographers take multiple shots from every possible angle! Plus, they will capture sound separately (depending on the location), as it can be hard to shoot both simultaneously.

How long will the production take? That all depends on what type of video you’re producing. For example, explainer videos can take less time than a TV ad production as each requires fewer steps in the pre-production stage.

4. Post Production

Now, it’s time to put all the puzzle pieces together🧩 In the post-production stage, the video production team brush up on mistakes, do some fine-tuning, and make the video tasty.

Expect so many versions of the video. There will be quite a few edits from the client, producer and creative director feedback. But hopefully, this will go smoothly! 🤞

5. Distribution

Will it be TV, social media or outdoor?📺 The target audience and budget will mainly decide on the distribution channel. As naturally, different audience will use different channels.

For example, if your target audience is young, they will most likely be easily reached on social  media.

And that’s a wrap! These five stages of video production will not only create a kickass corporate video to represent a brand, but it will save you time and money.

Stuck in the view jail?

You’re not alone😂

Many TikTok users have suffered the fate of the 200 view jail on content they’ve spent hours on.

Sadly there’s no quick fix to the dilemma. But there are some tips to follow to TRY to avoid this from happening🫶

😺TikTok can pick up copycats

➡️ Ensure you don’t directly copy your inspiration. Adapt the video to suit your brand.

💡Be consistent

➡️Stick to a posting schedule. Whether it’s posting once or twice a week, make sure you don’t skip.

🎣Hook people within the initial 3-6 seconds

TikTok users are quickly scrolling - you need to stop them in their tracks. Start by calling out your target audience or highlighting the solution you're about to solve.

P.S. TikTok has not officially flagged this “issue” as this is clearly apart of their algorithm of feeding at least 200 people your content to see how it performs.
